OK then, some other things to try:
- Completely uninstall Zune and make sure the zune.inf is deleted. Reboot and download and install a NEW version from the web. This is in case your copy is corrupted some how. Downloading a NEW copy is important, especially if there is some weird issue with the one you downloaded previously.
- Try a different USB cable and make sure it is plugged in directly to the computer, not through a USB hub. This is to make sure you have the best possible data connection with your PC. If you need to buy one, try searching for Deal Extreme (they have cheap stuff and they don't charge postage)
- Try a different USB port (especially important if you can't get hold of a different cable). This is incase the port has an issue.
- Install Zune on a freind's computer and see if your phone detects and installs there (preferably with a new USB cable and making sure to still download a NEW copy of Zune). If this doesn't work, your phone may be faulty.
If all this fails, I'd talk to the company you bought it from, or log a support call with HTC and include all of the things you tried to get it working, including the steps in this post.
I know it may not be an option to try the install on another PC, but if you can, you eliminate your computer as the issue and prove the problem is with the phone, which will leave any warranty type claims very hard to deny.
